Alpinism and mountaineering
If Rene Demaison says Valgaudemar is the most Himalayan valley in the Alps, he has a reason to! It has a dramatic high mountain ambience with more than 30 summits over 3000m in altitude and is one of the few mountain valleys to have kept its rugged authenticity.
There is a huge area to explore in an environment unspoilt by man. Since the start of alpinism, some of the most famous mountaineers have been opening up routes in Valgaudemar. Amongst them Coolidge and Gaston Rebufat.
There is something for everyone here. From easy glacial routes like the Cime du Vallon (3406m) or the Pic Jocelme (3458m) to more technical climbs like the south face of des Rouies (3589m).
There is a good network of Club Alpin Francais (CAF) refuges situated between 1480m and 2550m to break up long mountain routes and offer you a welcome meal and bed for the night!
